Units in Modular Group Algebras and their applications
Project Title: Units in Modular Group Algebras and their applications
Group rings combine two of the building blocks of Algebra, namely Group Theory and Ring Theory to create a Group Ring. Techniques are employed from Field Theory, Number Theory and Linear Algebra.
Coding Theory is one of the applications of Group Rings. This project will investigate the structure of the Unit Group of certain Group Algebras and their applications in Systems Error Management.
Essential: Minimum of 2.2 in an Honours Degree, including either Mathematics or Maths Studies.
Desirable: Interest in Algebra.
Preference will be given to candidates who have previous experience using Maple or GAP.
