Biosolids Treatment and Reuse

The treatment and reuse of biosolids has been the subject of numerous studies conducted in the Centre of Sustainability. See below a list of these projects.

• An Investigation of Uranium Series Radionuclides in Water Supplies, Wastewaters and Sludges in Ireland
• Characterisation of the physical, chemical and biological profile of a range of municipal and industrial sludges (1) – Broad spectrum characterisation.
• Characterisation of the physical, chemical and biological profile of a range of municipal and industrial sludges (2) – Capillary Electrophoresis methodologies for Oestrogen mimics.
• Control of sludge quality through optimisation of sludge treatment technologies.
• Development of ICP-MS elemental fingerprinting of fish otoliths, as a probe of the marine environment, to assess the long-term environmental effects of the dumping of wastes at sea.
• An investigation of soil quality parameters relating to agricultural reuse and land disposal options for the management of sludges.
• Development and Testing of Sustainable Development Indicators For Sludge Management (at a Local /Regional Level).
• Assessment of the toxicity of oestrogen mimicking compounds in a range of municipal and industrial sludges using cell culture and classical bioassays
• A Study of Engineering and Microbiological Aspects of Autothermal Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion (ATAD) Treatment of Cattle Slurries.
• The Optimisation of Sludge Treatment by Conditioning of Feed Solids.
• Constructing and Maintaining Trust in Food Systems: The Integrity of  Organic’ and the Reuse of Biosolids in Agriculture.
