Project Title: The vallum in Early Medieval ecclesiastical sites
Name: Frank Johnson
Supervisor: Dr. Marion Dowd
It is intended to carry out a study on the Early Medieval vallum in Ireland. The vallum is the enclosure surrounding the Early Medieval monastery and was incredibly significant in physical and symbolic terms. This study will include a search for all references in literature to the vallum as a preliminary approach. The main thrust of this assignment will be to analyse the valli found at 20 Early Medieval ecclesiastical sites in Co. Sligo (see Figure 1 and Table 1). As distinct or isolated features, the vallum has received little focussed research to date.
