The Chaplaincy aims to build a sense of fun, enthusiasm and community spirit throughout the Institute by supporting and facilitating all academic, sporting and cultural activities.
The team aim to do this by:
1. Newsletter – A weekly newsletter, ITS Happenin’, is produced by the Chaplaincy. It contains an editorial on current affairs, a thought for the week and news of all events happening inside the college. It is distributed at various locations throughout the college and by e-mail.
2. Choir – The Choir are a major part of large liturgies here in IT Sligo. The Choir sing at the opening of the year service, November mass for the dead, Ash Wednesday mass and the end of year exam mass. In addition they sing at memorial and special masses throughout the year. Practice takes place twice weekly in the Sanctuary, Monday and Tuesday from 6 – 7pm. Interesting and challenging outreach activities are also provided to the wider community.
3. Pilgrimages – Three pilgrimages are run each year, Croagh Patrick in October, Santiago de Compostello, Spain at Easter and Medgugorje, Herzegovina in August.
4. St.Vincent De Paul Society (SVP) – The Chaplaincy team works closely with students in the Institute’s SVP Society organizing various activities in the college and wider community. Some of these activities include:
- Visits to Nazareth House Elderly nursing home every Mon 6.30-8 pm. Bus departs from Aula at 6.30 pm
- Visits to Cregg House residential centre for adults with learning and physical disabilities every Tues 6.30-8 pm. Bus departs from Aula at 6.30 pm
- Fund raising: At least 3 Fundraising campaigns for different charities including a 24 hour fast for the Third World planned for the end of February ’07, a Christmas Raffle for Sligo Social Services which raised €1850 and a fun Rag Week fundraiser.
- Habitat for Humanity’ Social Housing Project in Belfast. There is an opportunity to join volunteers from the university in Colraine to help build socially affordable in Belfast. Students work at Saturdays, leaving Sligo at 8am and working on site from 11am – 4pm.
- Secondary School Grinds in Ballinode College. Students take one to three students for grinds on a weekly basis anytime from 4 – 6pm in Ballinode College which is right beside the Institute.
- National School Homework Clubs in the town. Students have the opportunity of volunteering in the MCR and Cranmore homework clubs in Sligo town for two hours every week.
- Third World Volunteer Work in the summer. Students get involved in many varied forms of volunteer work during holiday periods especially summer. Possible examples include:
- Volunteer travel and TEFL training
- EIL Intercultural Learning
- USIT
- Viatores Christi
