Writing Centre

The centre is a free writing support service available to all students in the Institute of Technology, Sligo. For many students writing can pose a barrier to academic success. The purpose of this service is to give students the tools to develop their writing skills in one-to-one sessions with qualified tutors. Support is provided in the following areas:

  • writing clear, concise and direct sentences
  • grammar and punctuation
  • how to proofread and revise one’s own work
  • stages of the writing process
  • paraphrasing and quoting sources
  • referencing

All students are welcome. Students can drop in or book an appointment in advance.

The Centre is located in the Library and is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday .  The tutors on duty each day are experienced teachers and writers. There will also be a qualified TEFL instructor available to give writing support to students for whom English is a second language on Mondays and Wednesdays. Tutorial sessions will last a maximum of 30 minutes.

Tutors will help students identify areas where their writing needs improvement and will help them understand the grammatical and stylistic tools to do this. We will not proofread or edit papers or give students “the answer”. Rather, the service is about giving students the tools to develop and organize ideas, write clearly and revise their own work.
