Entry Requirements

Applicants must satisfy one of the following general admission requirements.

Leaving Certificate

Requirements for Higher Certificate / L6

• You must achieve a pass in the Leaving Certificate— 5 grade Ds at Ordinary level including English or Irish and Mathematics.
• We also accept an E in Higher Level Mathematics, and a B2 or higher in Foundation mathematics, as meeting the mathematics entry requirements.

Please note that our School of Engineering does not accept Foundation Mathematics for any of its programmes.

Requirements for Ordinary Degree / L7

• As above, and in addition we require a minimum of 140 points for entry to all level 7 programmes.

Requirements for Honours Degree / L8

• You must achieve a pass in the Leaving Certificate – a minimum of 4 grade Ds at Ordinary level and 2 Grade C3 at Higher Level. This must include English or Irish and Mathematics.
• We accept an E in (Higher Level) Mathematics, and also a B2 or higher in Foundation mathematics, as meeting the mathematics entry requirements.
• We require a minimum of 140 points for all Level 8 programmes.

Please note our School of Engineering does not accept Foundation Mathematics for any of its programmes.

• The Honours Degree in Civil Engineering requires a C3 in Higher Level Mathematics.

For the purpose of calculating points, all subjects must be obtained at one sitting. However, for the purpose of meeting the entry requirements, more than one sitting may be considered. The above information relates to minimum entry requirements, required to secure an offer of a place on a programme of study.

Britain and Northern Ireland Entry Requirements

Higher Certificate / L6

• 1 A-level at Grade E or better and 4 GCSEs

Ordinary Degree / L7

• 1 A-level at Grade E or better and 4 GCSEs

Honours Degree / L8

• 2 A-levels at Grade D or better and 4 GCSEs

For points purposes, the best 3 A-levels and the best 2 O-levels are taken into account, all of which must be in one sitting. i.e. the A-levels in one exam and the O-levels in another. Mathematics and English or Irish must be included.

FETAC Qualifications

When applying, you must achieve the entry requirements and points for your chosen programme. The minimum entry requirements for graduates of FETAC awards are:

Higher Certificate / L6

• Full FETAC Level 5 award

Ordinary Degree / L7

• Full FETAC level 5 award

Honours Degree / L8

• Full FETAC level 5 award in a course in a cognate /related area and 3 Distinctions. Also, most programmes at IT Sligo require Mathematics.

• The Mathematics requirementcan be met by one of the following:

1. Leaving Certificate Mathematics (at Pass or Higher level)
2. Foundation Mathematics at a minimum of B2 excluding entry to all Engineering programmes.
3. A Pass in FETAC L5 Mathematics module

Some programmes may also have specific entry requirements and these will be detailed under each programme entry.

An overall points score is calculated on the best 8 modules. For modules with a credit value of 1, scores are awarded as follows:

• Distinction 50
• Merit 35
• Pass 20

Scores are adjusted for modules with a credit value other than 1. i.e. level 1 scores are multiplied by 0.5, level 2 scores are multiplied by 1.0 and level 3 scores are multiplied by 1.25.

Mature Students
To qualify as a mature student you must be over 23 on 1 January of the calendar year of entry.
