Lisa Namutamba – BArch (Hons) in Architecture

Name: Lisa Namutamba

School: Mt. St. Mary’s College Namagunga

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choose your course:

I always loved the idea of being able to create experiences through which people can access the various elements of life and through creating architecture I can deliver these experiences to people by having them enter spaces that I design.

What specifically about the course do you particularly enjoy:

I enjoy the studio culture of architecture where we can speak freely with tutors and peers as we all learn from each other and share ideas. We also get to make incredible models and go on-site visits which means lessons are never boring.

What is the best thing about your course that you think new applicants should know:

I love the fact that we do not do tests or exams but are graded on the work we do every day in class, which takes the pressure off having your final grade based on one piece of paper.

If you were speaking with a first-year student about to start your course, what advice/information would you give them:

Don’t be worried or scared that you don’t know what you are doing. Everyone in the room is feeling the same way and that is just the process of learning. Also, don’t be afraid to ask when you don’t know and be nice to everyone you meet.

If you are involved in sports, volunteering, working or have other passions you pursue outside of your academic life, can you tell us about that?

I am a part of the International Society which is a society where international students meet and explore Ireland together as a group of people new to the country and share our culture. It has created opportunities for friendships and interesting experiences.

What are your plans after ATU Sligo and any long term goals you are aiming for:

I hope to get a job and live in various cities for work. I hope through having this degree I can explore the world working on different projects and learn about their cultures and also help less fortunate communities.
