Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choose Software Development at ATU Sligo.

I began my Computing studies at ATU Sligo, where I quickly developed a passion for programming. The first year, which covered a wide range of subjects including networking, programming, user experience, and general computing, was instrumental in helping me explore different facets of the field. This experience allowed me to identify my true interests, and by the beginning of Year 2, I was certain that I wanted to specialise in Software Development.

What specifically about the degree do you particularly enjoy?

I particularly enjoy the small class sizes, which foster close interaction with both lecturers and classmates. The hands-on approach to learning makes the material engaging, and the numerous projects we undertake are invaluable for building a strong professional portfolio.

What is the best thing about Software Development that you think new applicants should know?

One of the best aspects of the degree is the paid work placement in Year 3, where your project supervisor helps you find the ideal company, either in Ireland or another European country. Most of my friends secured their placements early, and we even received job offers afterward.

What are your favourite modules in the degree?

I particularly enjoy the programming modules, such as Programming 1 and 2, Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), and Web Development with OpenStack. Building full-stack applications is especially rewarding. I also enjoyed the Cloud Development module, where we created cloud architecture using AWS. It was fascinating to see how everything comes together.

If you were speaking with a first-year student about to start Software Development, what advice would you give them?

Make sure to complete all your lab exercises—practice is essential to mastering programming. Share your projects on GitHub to track your progress and take pride in your work. Manage your time effectively to stay on top of assessments and exams. Build friendships, share your knowledge, and help others—teaching is a valuable skill. Keep learning over the summer and consider earning additional certifications.

Build a strong LinkedIn profile from day one; it can help you secure job opportunities even in your first year, as it did for me.

What are your plans after ATU Sligo, and what long-term goals are you aiming for?

I have secured a position with Dell Technologies as a Software Engineer. Once I complete Year 4 of my degree in June 2024, I will start this new job in Dublin.
