Students from IT Sligo’s BA (Hons) Performing Arts, specialising in Theatre Design, have collaborated with The Model’s Education Department and Blue Raincoats Theatre Company to create a unique multimedia performance event based on a short extract from Marina Carr’s play Woman and Scarecrow.
The one-off event in The Model’s Black Box will form part of the student’s graduate exhibition and coincides with an exciting exhibition of theatre and film designs opening at The Model next Tues May 10th at 6pm.
The exhibition will be opened by Abbey Theatre Production Director, Gavin Harding, and will provide a significant insight into the work that takes place behind the scenes in the world of theatre and film.
Detailed scaled models and drawings of a range of theatre and film work will be on display for plays by Shakespeare, Beckett, and Carr in a variety of theatres including the Abbey and Gaiety Theatres Dublin, The Hawks Well Theatre, Sligo Abbey, The Royal Court London, as well as film locations in Ireland, US and Ardmore Studios Ireland Dublin.
IT Sligo lecturer, Frank Conway, said:
“The course at IT Sligo is completely unique in that it is the only full time BA Hons Degree in Performing Arts in Ireland that provides an opportunity to specialise in Theatre Design. Prior to this, students wishing to study Theatre Design have had to travel abroad, and now many Irish theatre companies are bringing designers in from the UK and elsewhere. It is a great credit to the Institute that it is catering for an industry that has employment to offer Irish talent. Our course, which is highly flexible in catering to students strengths, and focuses on developing imagination, offers a solid base that can be applied over a wide range of industry related disciplines, including; theatre, film and TV design, commercial and fashion design, animation and music video design. We have been surprised by students on placement being offered paid employment, even before they have finished their course. It is heartening in these difficult times”
Students from the course are provided with a range of employable skills and with placements in professional theatre and film companies in Ireland and abroad.
The exhibition runs from Tuesday May 10th to Sunday May 15th at The Model Education Department, The Mall, Sligo.
