Four Environmental Science researchers from IT Sligo presented at the 23rd Irish Environmental Researchers colloquium (ENVIRON) at NUI Galway recently on subjects ranging from how seaweed can produce energy to the control of zebra mussels.

ENVIRON is recognised as the definitive Irish environmental research conference, held annually for scientists and engineers. Ninety-nine oral presentations and fifty posters were presented at the conference, represented by environmental scientists and engineers from all universities and Institutes of Technology.

• Sara Meehan – Zebra mussel control using Zequanox® in an Irish waterway’.

• Rory Sheehan’s – ‘An examination of the potential vectors and pathways of spread for Corbicula fluminea in Ireland’.

• Pamela Boyle -‘Vegetation monitoring of farmland in west Mayo: potential use for identification of extent and quality of High Nature Value farmland in North-West Ireland’.

• Carlos Vanegas, Peter McCormick, Colm Henry and Carol Cassells – presented posters demonstrating their research on biogas production from seaweeds.

IT Sligo lecturer and a member of the academic planning committee for the Galway ENVIRON, Dr Frances Lucy was also elected to the Council of the Environmental Science Association of Ireland (ESAI), at the Conference.

IT Sligo has hosted ENVIRON three times, including the very first conference in the early 1990s, and it is expected that it will return to the Institute in 2015.
