IT Sligo’s preparations for the forthcoming Higher Education Sigerson Cup competition continued on Sunday when they went down to reigning provincial champions Mayo in the Connacht FBD League on a final scoreline of 1-16 to 0-8.
Mayo, who are managed for former IT Sligo student Stephen Rochford, led by 0-7 to 0-3 at half-time, and stamped their authority on the match in the second period with all six forwards getting on the scoresheet. Kevin McLoughlin’s goal fifteen minutes from the end sealed the issue.
Adam Traynor (scorer of five points), Ray Connolly and Niall Walsh all worked hard for IT Sligo but the Mayo defence rarely looked like conceding a goal.
The Institute will conclude their Connacht FBD League campaign next Sunday when they play NUI Galway in the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence, Ballyhaunis, at 2pm.
IT Sligo begin their Sigerson Cup campaign on January 26th when they travel to play IT Carloiw in the first round.
