An IT Sligo online student is celebrating a gold medal success at the All-Ireland Karate Intervarsities in Dublin.
Shane Dolphin, a second-year Bachelor of Engineering student in Polymer Processing, took the top prize in the senior men’s Kata event, held at University College Dublin. This is one of the main disciplines in Karate where the emphasis is placed on technique and form.
It was the 29-year-old’s first time to compete in this event, although the County Galway native is steeped in the sport of Karate.
Shane is a 4th Dan Karate black belt.
“I took up the sport at the age of four,” explains Shane. My parents (John and Marie) are my coaches and instructors. I suppose it was cheaper than paying for a babysitter. They just brought me to the classes.”
Shane, who hails from Ballinasloe in Co Galway was IT Sligo’s sole representative at the Karate intervarsities.
“The route to the final wasn’t plain sailing. I faced a couple of challenging opponents but I’m delighted to have won.”
Shane’s secured the gold medal ahead of some 30 competitors in the Kata category.
And there was further podium success for him in Dublin when he also competed in the senior Kumite event, claiming a silver medal.
Shane’s gold medal success has helped him earn a place on the Ireland senior men’s Karate team, which will compete at the European Championships in Montpellier, France, in May.
