Twelve postgraduate researchers from the School of Science in IT Sligo presented at the recent Environ 2016, which was held at the University of Limerick.
Environ is the annual Irish Environmental Research Colloquium, where research students and staff from all Irish higher education institutes showcase their research and network with fellow researchers, agencies and industry.
Last year, Environ was held at IT Sligo for its 25th anniversary, involving many of this year’s Sligo attendees. The six oral and six poster presentations showcased the wide-ranging environmental research carried out at the Institute.
Students from the Centre for Environmental Research Innovation and Sustainability (CERIS) presented on diverse topics from ‘molecular toolkits for the mushroom industry’ to ‘improving the design of greenways as ecological corridors’. Other presentations included ‘environmental applications for nanotechnology’, and ‘examining the use of crab waste for use in bioprocessing’.
During Environ 2016, Frances Lucy (IT Sligo) was conferred as the new Chair of the Environmental Sciences Association of Ireland.
“It is a great honour to be given this role for the next two years,” said Dr Lucy. “The ESAI facilitates many opportunities for environmental researchers via events and networking. Our council are very enthusiastic and we have lots of plans in the pipeline to boost activities.”
