IT Sligo lecturer Laura Tighe is the new women’s National Standard Distance Triathlon Champion for 2016 after winning the famous Hell of the West race in Kilkee, County Clare.
Laura, who is a native of Enniscrone, is a lecturer in the Bachelor of Business in Recreation & Leisure at IT Sligo and has firm sporting ambitions to compete for Ireland at the Olympic Games in Toyko in 2020.
The event in Clare was the second stop in this year’s Super Series and doubled-up as the 2016 National Championship over the Standard (Olympic) distance.
Competitors had to battle with a wild sea on the 1500 metres swim, face in to stiff winds along the west Clare coast on the 44km bike route, and finally tackle a hilly and exposed 10-kilometre run along the cliffs towards Kilkee.
