It All Adds Up For Maths Week

The joy of numbers is being showcased all this week at IT Sligo, as part of the 11th Annual Maths Week which is taking place nationwide (15th – 23rd of October).

Maths Week Ireland is an all-Ireland festival of maths and numeracy which aims to promote mathematics for all and is the largest festival of its kind in the world.

Over one million people have participated in Maths Week since its inception in 2005, and Maths Week continues to grow in popularity with over 250,000 people expected to take part in 2016.

Throughout the week world renowned and locally acclaimed mathematicians have been entertaining people of all ages with the wonder of maths through fun and interesting talks, games, teasers, challenges and magic maths shows.

Among the highlights of Maths Week IT Sligo = was Andrew Jeffrey’s ‘Magic of Maths’ show in front of  250 primary school students from across the North West of Ireland, in the Institute’s Aurivo Auditorium on Wednesday.

The show featured interactive maths tricks, visual tricks, shapes, tricks with numbers etc. with an emphasis on motivating students and building confidence. The show was full of audience participation, lots of noise and great fun.

Andrew’s, who’s known as the The Mathemagician, is a teacher, lecturer, magician, and keynote speaker and has been described as a mathematical evangelist. He is the author of several books, including ‘Be A Wizard With Numbers’, ‘Magic for Kids’, ‘100 Top Tips for Top Maths Teachers’, ‘Top 20 Maths Displays’, and the brand new ‘Cool, Calm and Calculators.’

Co-ordinated by Calmast at Waterford Institute of Technology, Maths Week Ireland is run as a partnership of over 50 public and private sector institutions and groups, including the universities and institutes of technology, professional bodies, libraries and visitor centres who are committed to promoting an interest in mathematics, as well as many of Ireland’s flagship employers.
