IT Sligo Students collaborate on National Health & Safety Competition
Four teams of IT Sligo students, comprising Occupational Safety and Health (3rd and 4th year), Interior Architecture (4th year) and Quantity Surveying (4th year) , have entered a third level competition, sponsored by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) that sees inter-disciplinary teams take on a ‘safety in design’ challenge.
Six finalists will be short-listed and then face a judging panel, made up of HSA and industry representatives, for a first prize of €3000. The competition requires the entrants to take on the role of a team commissioned to design and build a student services building, located on the fictional JP O’Leary Business College campus based in Dublin.
The four teams have all produced detailed submissions including areas such as: risk assessments for hazards on-site, a variety of method statements e.g. excavation of underground services and designing for future maintenance.
The teams must now wait to see if they will be short-listed for the final which will take place in Dublin on the 25th of March 2010.
