Who is the Student Counselling Service for?
The Service is available to all Registered Students at ATU Sligo residing in the Republic of Ireland.
Is it Free?
Yes.
Where is the Service Located?
We are located in the Student Centre, the service is on the ground floor of the building, beside the SU offices and shop.
What are the Opening Hours of the Service?
The Student Counselling Service is open during the academic year from 9am to 4pm Monday to Thursday.

Will my attendance at the student counselling service be on my academic record?
No.
Confidentiality is a central and integral part of the counselling process. All information given by you to your counsellor is confidential and won’t be disclosed to anyone outside of the Student Counselling Service. The only exception is if your counsellor is concerned about immediate risk to you or a third party.
I am worried about a friend, what should I do?
If you are worried about a friend, it is helpful to:
- Discuss attending the student counselling service with the student,
- Reiterate that the Counselling Service is confidential,
- Provide accurate information on how to access the Service,
- Where necessary accompany the student to the Service,
- Self-referral to the Counselling Service is welcomed and encouraged. No referral letter is necessary.

How long will I be waiting to get an appointment with the counsellor?
The waiting time for an appointment with the Student Counselling Service varies but students are generally offered an appointment within 2 to 3 weeks’ time
However, the Student Counselling Service does offer Daily Emergency Appointments, an emergency involves any situation whereby there is a significant or immediate concern that a student is at risk of harming themselves or others.
How many sessions are available to me per academic year?
The Student Counselling Service offers each student a maximum of 6 sessions per academic year. If you are unavailable to attend your appointment, it is very important that you call the service to cancel. Any missed appointments which are not cancelled are included as part of your 6 sessions.
How long is each session with the Counsellor?
Each appointment with the Student Counselling Service will last approximately 50 minutes
What kind of Issues can I discuss with the Counsellor?
Students are welcome to speak about any issue which may be impacting on their mental health and general well-being
