Michael O’ Muircheartaigh, the voice of Gaelic Sport and Packie Bonner, Irish soccer hero, were in Sligo last night to celebrate the annual IT Sligo Sports Scholarship Awards and to present 18 students with awards.   The scholarship scheme has been launched to assist talented athletes reach their sporting potential.

This year,  Scholarships have been awarded to GAA players, ladies and men’s soccer with sports bursaries going to athletes in  golf, racquetball and surfing! IT Sligo has a proud history of achievements in sport which can boast bringing home the Umbro Cup for soccer and the Sigerson Cup for Gaelic football, demonstrating the  calibre of student these scholarships support.

“Institutes of Technology  are a wonderful addition to the Irish educational system because they supply skills needed in the modern world. College life the world over is enhanced by the promotion of sports within these institutions. In that light it is great to see IT Sligo granting these scholarships to both male and female students.” Said Micháel O’Muircheartaigh.  Packie Bonar added ‘I am  thrilled to see the leadership and proactive approach being taken by IT Sligo’.

Professor Terri Scott, President of IT Sligo  said ‘We encourage a healthy and balanced lifestyle among our students through participation in sport. We are delighted to have Packie Bonar and Micháel O’Muircheartaigh join us to celebrate the announcement of Sports scholarships’. Both men are outstanding role models   and  our students were thrilled to have   them join us.
