IT Sligo has achieved second place in the Sunday Times’ highly influential Institute of Technology of the Year League Table. The Sunday Times has placed IT Sligo as Ireland’s most improved Institute following a stunning ten place jump in one year from 21st to 11th place overall in the annual survey of Ireland’s best universities.
The performance recognises and endorses IT Sligo’s performance across all categories. It is a remarkable turn around for an Institute that has taken immense strides forward in the last few years, making an invaluable contribution to the North West region through its courses, research, innovation and support for business.
President, Professor Terri Scott says: “This is much deserved recognition of the dedication and hard work of all IT Sligo staff and students. It is also a tremendous vote of confidence for the North West region and all our partners and supporters here. Our success is their success.”

The Sunday Times League Table highlights the Institute’s work across its entire portfolio.
IT Sligo has become Ireland’s leading provider of online and distance learning and it offers the country’s largest portfolio of engineering courses delivered online. The Sunday Times praised the Institute’s research and development track record which it says “has been a catalyst for attracting smart economy jobs to the region.”
And the success story does not end here as the campus is being transformed by an ambitious €12 million development programme. Terri Scott said: “The work continues, we are not planning to rest on our laurels. Next month we look forward to welcoming President McAleese to open our new library which provides our students with a next generation study and learning environment.”

The results from the league table show that IT Sligo has a strong level of student satisfaction, along with good retention and employment opportunities for graduates. IT Sligo is also renowned across the country for its innovation in learning with several new degrees added including one in sustainable energy. The Institute’s School of Science has seen a growth in numbers year on year since 2002, with a growth of 30% taking up science in the college in the past eight years.
