IT Sligo recently awarded participating first year Recreation and Leisure students and their exercise trainees, a certificate acknowledging their learning and participation in an Exercise Programme organised by the students.
The Walking Exercise Programme required students to spend the preceding twelve weeks coaching their trainee (generally one of their parents ) through a walking programme, which increased in intensity as the weeks progressed. The initiative, under the tutorship of Kerry Larkin, promotes the social and health benefits of exercise. The programme also saw family members working together and enabled parents to experience firsthand the work being done at IT Sligo by their offspring.
The award ceremony included a lap of the 400 meter track followed by the presentation of certificates. The event concluded with refreshments and a motivational talk by Captain Michael McDonagh, a long time driver of health enhancing physical activity within Ireland. This innovative module has become annual fixture on the IT Sligo calendar, with large number of students, parents and friends actively participating in the programme.
