In a nutshell

A 2 year programme to introduce a spectrum of computing topics. After year 1, you will make an informed choice to adopt any one of a number of related but distinct computing programmes.

SG102 is a good choice for those seeking to enter the world of computing but who have yet to identify which programme. Here, your first year is common after which and with consultation with lecturers and fellow students, you'll be better positioned to choose between the many offerings at IT Sligo.

Our common first year gives you the space to better consider your options. A further year in your chosen programme.

What's involved?

A common Year 1

You'll study the same modules as all our first year computing. Coding is a key skill obviously and we start you off with C#. You also work with the Internet of Things using tiny micro-controlers & sensors to interact with the physical worlds and the virtual cloud. You'll also study computer hardware, design thinking, web design and design/build games to help you better understand how programmes work to achieve a goal.

Building out your skills base

Year 2 is where you really dig into the topics particular to your programme. You're aiming to become a software developer so we do more C#, Javascript and web development. You'll work with databases to better understand how data is stored and queried by your coding. And you'll study how we design and build really large software applications.

Career Prospects

For computing graduates, the outlook could hardly be better. Employment of people with computer and information technology skills is projected to grow 12 percent from 2014 to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations. Over half the jobs in the Irish Independent Top 50 Jobs of the Future are IT related.

The most recent report from the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs highlights continuing strong demand from enterprise for high-level ICT skills, with 44,500 potential job openings for ICT professionals are forecast over the period 2013 to 2018 in Ireland alone. The future is indeed bright.

Further Study

Successful graduates can enter our Level 8 (Honours) add-on year to round out their networking know-how. Level 8 degrees are highly valued by employers. In the National Employer Survey (2015), the majority of employers (72%) recruited graduates with an Honours Degree.
