Course Summary
ATU Sligo developed this blended on-line part time programme in collaboration with the Local Authority Services National Training Group (LASNTG) and the Department of Transport. It has been operating since 2015 and provides applied and advanced learning and skills for engineers working in the roads services sector, in both public bodies and private companies.
The programme consists of two semesters (1 academic year) of taught modules which leads to the award of a postgraduate Level 9 Certificate and also provides advanced entry to the Post Graduate Diploma or MEng in Road and Transport Engineering Level 9 at ATU Sligo.
For local authority engineers, nominated by their employer, this programme is 80% funded by DTTAS and 20% funded by local authorities.
Course Description
This course will prepare local authority engineers, and engineers employed by consultants and contractors with the knowledge, skills and competences required for successful road maintenance engineering and network management operation. In the first semester, module topics include geotechnical engineering, transport planning, and structural assessment and inspection of bridges. In semester two, modules relating to road pavement design and management, traffic control and road safety, and contracts and liabilities are covered.
Special Purpose Awards
Successfully completing the following modules will result in an award title as follows:
- All modules: Post Grad Cert in Road Maintenance Engineering and Network Mgt.
- Modules 1, 4 and 5: Post Grad Cert in Road Network Management.
Key Course Information
Note: Each module is equivalent to 5 ECTS credits. Modules 1, 2 and 3 are grouped in one semester (Semester 1); modules 4, 5 and 6 are in Semester 2.

Entry Requirements
BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
Applicants without the standard academic qualification and with significant relevant work experience may also be considered through ATU Sligo’s Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) process. RPL is a process that may allow you to gain admission to a programme or to receive exemptions / credit from some parts of a programme based on demonstrated learning that you may have achieved through another programme of study or through your work and career. Career Opportunities
This programme provide advanced applied skills and postgraduate learning for civil engineers who are currently working or wish to pursue a career in the road services sector. Graduates can build on successive completion of this programme by progressing to Year 2 of the Postgraduate Diploma (2 year programme) and /or MEng in Road and Transport Engineering L9 (3 year programme) and achieving a major QQI postgraduate qualification on NFQ.
Further Study
Upon successful completion of this programme, graduates can apply to transfer into Year 2 of the Postgraduate Diploma or Masters of Engineering in Road and Transport Engineering Level 9 on-line programmes at ATU Sligo.

Total Programme Fee: €4,500

If you apply and are approved for an online course at ATU Sligo, you will be required to pay a non-refundable deposit of €250 to secure your place. Your deposit will then be credited against the course fees once you are registered as a student. Students at ATU Sligo are also eligible to claim tax relief at the standard rate for tuition fees.
