About Electronic Engineering
Modern electronic engineering systems are often referred to as embedded systems and these systems are the main focus of Electronic Engineering in ATU Sligo. Embedded Systems combine hardware (electronic circuits), software (computer programs) together into products such as mobile phones, MP3 Players, computer network routers, aircraft guidance systems and automobile engine management systems.
About this Programme
This is year 3 (the award year) of the Level 7 BEng in Electronic Engineering. Having completed the programme, you will be able to:
- Implement serial communications protocols on an 8-bit microcontroller.
- Use software tools for digital signal processing.
- Write embedded code for an 8-bit microcontroller.
- Complete an embedded systems project with an 8-bit core.
- Design, integrate and test an embedded system.
Key Course Information
Study hours: Whether you are studying part-time online, blended or full-time online, it is very important that you allocate enough study time to your online course to stay focused, reduce stress and achieve your goals. For part-time online or blended learning, it is recommended that you should try to allow for 7 hours per week for a 5 credit module.
Live Lectures: Live lectures normally take place between 6pm and 10pm, Monday to Thursday but this may vary depending on the availability of specific lecturers. For the BEng in Electronic and Computer Engineering students must expect to attend live classes 3-4 times per week and each class lasts approximately 1 hour. If the Live Classroom scheduled times for the live online lectures do not suit you, recordings will be made available through Moodle

Entry Requirements
Merit Grade at Level 6 (Higher Cert) in Electronic Engineering or related discipline. Applicants who have successfully completed the Certificate in Electronics and Automation are also eligible. Applicants with other qualifications and/or with relevant industrial experience will also be considered through ATU Sligo’s RPL process.
Career Opportunities
This course allows students to pursue a career at associate engineering level anywhere in the electronics, software or manufacturing industry.

If you apply and are approved for an online course at ATU Sligo, you will be required to pay a non-refundable deposit of €250 to secure your place. Your deposit will then be credited against the course fees once you are registered as a student. Students at ATU Sligo are also eligible to claim tax relief at the standard rate for tuition fees.
