Course Summary
ATU Sligo (formly IT Sligo), has been delivering full time degree courses in Occupational Safety and Health for over 20 years and are leading providers of online education programmes. This add-on level 8 in Occupational Safety and Health Management is specifically designed for those health and safety professionals who wish to obtain a relevant level 8 honours degree. Organisations are demanding health and safety risk management are integral components of good organisational management.
This degree is specifically designed for those who want to take up a management role in occupational safety and health. In recognition of the broader remit of the role of the health and safety professional in the workplace, modules on environment, business, training and project management are covered in this course. Our lecturers are experts in their fields and have vast experience delivering both traditional and online education.
This course is offered part-time over two years through online lectures and resource materials which are available 24/7 to the learner. There will be one workshop per semester where the students will undertake teamwork, case studies, lectures and/or site visits. Assessments will be a blend of online and final examinations and students will be instructed in these online methods at the start of the course. Typically lectures occur on line one evening per week for approximately one or two hours depending on credit allocation. There are opportunities to ask questions and interact similar to a real classroom experience or alternatively the live recordings can be accessed for repeat viewing at any time. Participants require a broadband service to access the material and participate on the course.

Study hours: Whether you are studying part-time online, blended or full-time online, it is very important that you allocate enough study time to your online course to stay focused, reduce stress and achieve your goals. For part-time online or blended learning, it is recommended that you should try to allow for 5-6 hours per week per 5 credit module to your studies.
This course is accredited by the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH).

Entry Requirements
Participants must hold a minimum of 60 ECTS credits at NFQ Level 7 in OSH. It is envisaged that applicants with other qualifications and with relevant OSH experience may also be considered for entry. This will be subject to assessment of other recognised qualifications, and/or recognised prior learning (RPL) and/or relevant work experience. A minimum of three years experience working directly in an OSH role is essential in order to be considered for RPL. These candidates may be required to complete a portfolio, be interviewed for suitability and be subject to prior approval by the Programme Board.
Career Opportunities
Graduates will be qualified at Occupational Safety and Health Advisor/Manager level. Employment prospects exist in both the public and private sectors in organisations of all types and sizes.
Further Study
Graduates can progress onto our MSc in Environmental Health and Safety Management (Online) - Institute of Technology Sligo (itsligo.ie) or onto a Level 10 PhD with a H2.2 or above.

If you apply and are approved for an online course at ATU Sligo, you will be required to pay a non-refundable deposit of €250 to secure your place. Your deposit will then be credited against the course fees once you are registered as a student. Students at ATU Sligo are also eligible to claim tax relief at the standard rate for tuition fees.
