A feature of the game was the outstanding performance by Aileen Gilroy who scored two goals. She also supplied the cross for Deirdre Doherty’s goal. Emma Hansberry was unfortunate not to get on the score sheet. On 3 occasions she was denied by great saves from the UCD goalkeeper. IT Sligo goalkeeper and captain, Roisin McCafferty made an excellent save from a penalty-kick during the game.

Intervarsity Cup Final

IT Sligo 0 UCC 0 after extra-time (UCC win on penalty shoot-out)

The 4th game left its mark on both teams in terms of energy levels. The IT Sligo team played exceptionally well and created a lot of chances with an attacking style of play. UCC for their part were superb defensively and worked extremely hard to ensure IT Sligo didn’t create as many goal scoring opportunities as in the previous games. Colleen Cavanagh came closest to scoring but her shot was deflected onto the woodwork. Geraldine McLaughlin had a header saved on the line. Deirdre Doherty came close with a free kick. Aileen Gilroy shot over the crossbar after a superb run and had another shot blocked. Geraldine McLaughlin and Emma Hansberry also had shots on goal. UCC’s best opportunity came from a well delivered corner just before half-time. In the ensuing scramble a goal bound shot came back off a UCC player before IT Sligo finally cleared. Both teams looked tired in extra-time. Maria Harrington almost won the game in the final minute but her goal bound shot was tipped over the cross-bar by the UCC keeper.

In the penalty shoot-out, Lady Luck went UCC’s way as they won 4-3.

For IT Sligo it was a bitter pill to swallow. Their attacking brand of football had lit up the tournament and they scored 13 goals in 4 matches. The IT Sligo team were also excellent defensively and didn’t concede any goals in all 4 matches. All defenders did well but Kim Flood in particular was outstanding.
