50th EVENTS CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS

IT Sligo’s 50th anniversary has been marked by an historic event like no other in our history. Little did we know when planning all these events over the past couple of years our celebrations would be cut short by a global pandemic. Alas, we have had to cancel all of our planned events but we hope to deliver some online celebrations and possibly even an actual event under strict public health guidelines. Either way we hope we can mark our 50th anniversary this year in some small way. Stay tuned and stay safe!
Since the foundation of the Institute in 1970, the institute has progressed from being a Regional Technical College with 100 students and 10 graduates (at apprenticeship and Certificate level) to being today an Institute of Technology with 7,500 students with graduates across all levels, from apprentices to the recent graduation of ten students who attained Doctorate degrees. In that time, the Institute has grown in terms of scale, facilities and in reputation to being recognised as one of Ireland’s leading Institutes of Technology. It has been a leading driver of development over that time in the Northwest region, in terms of society, economy and culture.
The IT Sligo 50 celebrations in 2020 will recognise the achievements of the Institute and will acknowledge the commitment of the regional community in supporting the Institute over the years. It will reflect on the achievement of the graduates of the Institute, and provide an opportunity to promote the Institute as a place of life long learning and regional development. In addition to specific events, the year of celebration will also see legacy projects that will materially contribute to its ongoing development as an engine for transformation in the region as we move towards a Technological University in 2021.
