Institute of Technology, Sligo has signed a comprehensive and ground-breaking memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Fleming College in Canada, which will provide a new pathway to a degree qualification for 10 Fleming diploma programmes.
The new partnership will enable Canadian students who are studying a range of diploma courses at Fleming, to have a clearly defined route towards a degree award from IT Sligo.
For the first time, Carpentry Technician students at Fleming will now be able to complete IT Sligo’s Bachelor of Science BSc in Advanced Wood & Sustainable Building Technology or BSc in Construction Project Management
The new IT Sligo collaboration builds on a growing series of collaborations between the Institute and Canadian third level institutions which have paved the way for student and faculty exchanges over the last five years.
“We are delighted to expand our extensive Colleges Ontario institutional partnerships to now include Fleming College. Our partnership provides flexible, full credit transfer degree completion pathways (full-time and on-line) to Fleming College Diploma and Advanced Diploma students in a wide variety of subject areas. For the first time, Carpentry Technician students at Fleming will now be able to complete IT Sligo’s Bachelor of Science BSc in Advanced Wood & Sustainable Building Technology or BSc in Construction Project Management” said Patrick Lynch (International Manager, IT Sligo).
“Applicants can apply for admission to the relevant IT Sligo degree program via our local representatives, KOM Consultants, based in Hamilton, Ontario. Their services are free of charge to interested students.”
Fleming College is home to 16,800 full and part-time students. Based in Ontario, It has four and offers more than 100 full-time programmes in Arts and Heritage, Business, Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences, General Arts and Sciences, Health and Wellness, Justice and Community Development, Skilled Trades and Technology, and Continuing Education.
The college is named after the 19th century Canadian inventor and engineer Sir Sandford Fleming, who was best known for devising worldwide standard time zones.
Welcoming the new partnership, Maxine Mann, Dean of Fleming College’s School of Trades and Technology in the School of Business said: “IT Sligo and Fleming believe that the changing economic environment is based on knowledge that is international in scope. These pathways acknowledge these changes and offer greater choice to our students to enter that flexible work environment.”
This latest IT Sligo agreement with Fleming will offer degree pathways to Canadian students in the following courses:
- Carpentry Technician to BSc in Advanced Wood & Sustainable Building Technology BSc in Construction Project Management
- Environmental Technician/Technology, Ecosystem Management to BSc in Environmental Protection or BSc (Hon) in Environmental Science
- Early Children Education to BA (Hon) in Early Childhood Care & Education
- Social Service Work to BA (Hon) in Social Care Practice
- Instrumentation & Control Engineering Technician to BEng in Mechatronics
- Computer Engineering Technician/Technology to BSc in Computing in Systems & Networking or BSc (Hon) in Computing in Systems & Networking.
