An IT Sligo BA Honours in Writing & Literature student, Niamh MacCabe, is the overall winner of Ireland’s Own Anthology of Winning Short Stories for 2017.
Niamh’s story “Dirty Silver on Matt Black Rock” was selected from over 500 entries and is anthologised with 37 other emerging writers across Ireland.
In Niamh’s story, a young couple in the Caribbean set out to the sea on an idyllic day and confront a life-changing brush with death and discover their instinct for survival.
‘We are heading for the rock pool down the little cul-de-sac zigzagging to the sea, a stretch known only to locals. I could almost be back home, on some narrow Irish boreen etched into the rock of Connemara, if it wasn’t for the Caribbean sun radiating off the roadside boulders, and the scent of bound- less growth.’
Niamh McCabe from Fivemilebourne in Co Leitrim is a first-year student in IT Sligo’s new BA Honours in Writing & Literature.
Ireland’s Own has been running writing competitions for over 30 years and this is the eighth annual anthology of short stories to be published. The family magazine continues to sell 35,000 copies a week.
Niamh MacCabe is a first-year student in the Institute’s BA (Hons) in Writing & Literature which was launched in September 2016. It is a three-year Level honours degree programme.
