IT Sligo Design Students Win Top Awards at Design Week
Cardboard chairs and digital assistants – these exciting new designs, formulated by creative design students at IT Sligo and team members, have received three national awards. The students took three out of the top four places in the Institute of Designers in Ireland Design Week Student Competition.
The winner of the Design Week Student Design Competition was Robert J Boormann from IT Sligo. Entrants were asked to design a chair made from two sheets of corrugated cardboard. The judges were extremely impressed with the overall quality of the entries, as Boormann’s elegant but edgy ‘IKE & MIKE’ chair that topped both judges’ lists. The runners-up included Marta Slawinska of IT Sligo for her faceted ‘Edgy’ chair and Vincent Naughton of IT Sligo for his simple but elegant ‘Simplex’ chair.

Design Lecturer at IT Sligo Diarmuid Timmons commented: ‘The fact that IT Sligo students took three of the top four places in a national design competition reflects the professional approach they have to working on design projects. A key element to the Creative Design Course at IT Sligo is that the students carry out projects in conjunction with outside businesses and companies. Students have worked with a vast range of companies ranging from medical devices companies, biomedical and computer peripheral manufacturers, a wood veneer manufacturer through to the packaging on a range of products for a dairy producer.
Students have designed everything from baby food, intelligent insoles for sports shoes, a recyclable paperboard coat hanger, a product to alleviate bed sores to the operational protocol for a medical tourism company. Working on this number of live projects means that students really have to be on top of things when it comes to understanding the clients brief and delivering results professionally and on time. It puts a lot of pressure on the students but the experience is invaluable, making them clued in and effective designers by the time the reach the workplace.’
