IT Sligo will hold a Course Information Day on April 25th which will provide valuable insights for prospective students, particularly final year Leaving Certificate students who are still weighing their final third-level choices.
Anyone considering applying for mature student entry will also benefit from a range of practical advice available and there will be latest updates about online courses for people considering distance learning.
Gerry Hegarty, IT Sligo Student Affairs Manager, said: “Many CAO applicants have yet to settle on their preferences, so this period is crucially important for them. The choices they make will dictate the quality of their experience in Higher Education and directly affect their later working-lives. Poor choice can lead to much unhappiness.”
“Our Course Information Day will help students make informed choices, particularly in the CAO ‘change of mind’ window up to July 1st.”
During the highly focussed three hour event, participants will hear from lecturers and grant advisers, talk to undergraduates and tour display stands, and see for themselves the latest ultra modern facilities that are part of the Institute’s multi-million expansion project.
The focal point will be 13 simultaneous workshops covering the subject areas that comprise the more than 50 degree and certificate programmes courses available at IT Sligo. The event is from 11am to 2pm and each of the 45 minute workshop lectures will be repeated, enabling participants to attend two, if they wish.
Prospective students will learn about online courses, grants, accommodation, scholarships and hear about the student experience at IT Sligo. Potential mature students will pick up a range of helpful information and advice, including tips on how to prepare for a mature applicant interview.
The organisers say the Information Day will be of benefit both for students who are already committed to gaining IT Sligo entry and others who may still be uncertain about their choices.
IT Sligo’s courses span its three Departments — Business and Social Sciences; Engineering and Design; Science. They include diverse subjects such as accounting, international marketing and sales, civil engineering, software development, biomedical science, performing arts, event management, social care, interior architecture, forensic investigation, recreation and leisure and tourism management.
Institute of Technology Sligo is continually enhancing its courses to ensure that they equip students for the challenges and opportunities of the modern workplace.
Several hundred Leaving Certificate students as well as teachers, career advisers and parents are expected.
Hollie Hastings, IT Sligo’s School Liaison Officer, said: “This is a great ‘last chance’ opportunity for students who have mentioned IT Sligo courses on their application forms to speak to the lecturers and to students who are studying them.”
“They’ll get helpful information about the programmes they’re interested in. For many, that in itself will provide welcome reassurance that they are on the right track. But very importantly, it should help crystallise the thoughts of those students who are still in two minds about their choice.”
