IT Sligo hosted the annual Eurachem Analytical Measurement Competition (EAMC) recently. The event was attended by students from the Institute of Technology and University Sectors nationwide. Competitors were welcomed by Professor Terri Scott, President IT Sligo and briefed by Dr Ted McGowan, IT Sligo. State of the art laboratories in the IT Sligo Science Block provided the perfect backdrop for a competition requiring accuracy and calmness as students performed chemical measurement and analysis procedures to international standards. Competition judges were Dr. Tom Hannigan, (Forensic Scientist, State Forensics Laboratory), Dr. Ray Leonard (Assoc. Director / Materials Testing & Analytical Support, Henkel Loctite Technology Centre) and Dr. Darragh Cunningham, (Scientific Officer, Laboratory Services, Environmental Protection Agency). Awards were presented by Dr. Sean McEwen, Site Director, Abbott Pharmaceutical Operations Ireland Ltd.
The overall winner of the competition was: Sarah Hanna and Jenny Hill from the School of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences of Dublin Institute of TechnologySchool of Chemical and Pharmaceutical SciencesSchool of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Scie. Their mentor was Dr. Patricia Behan.
