Fourth year Interior architecture students are competing against over one hundred established practices around the country in a competition, organised by the Irish Architecture Federation (IAF), which calls for architects to collaborate with transition year students to design a ‘space for learning’ within the school environment. Architects who have entered the competition include award-winning practices, O’Donnell Tuomey and A2 architects.
Interior Architecture students have sought to establish the spatial and learning requirements of current transition year (TY) students by facilitating the exploration of ideas through sketching, model making and group discussion. This has resulted in the development of design concepts aimed at delivering meaningful solutions to the challenges posed by the existing school environment.
IT Sligo student Sile Stewart who is working with the Sligo Grammar school Transition year said “This has been a fantastic learning opportunity and a real challenge…”
A transition year student from the Ursuline College said “I love working on the project, its mint!”
Submissions were made to the IAF on Wednesday March 10th, 2010 and the students must now wait to see if they make it into the top ten entries being selected to develop and exhibit their design proposals. Whatever the outcome the IAF are planning a national exhibition tour, beginning Autumn 2010, which will include all 120 entries.
