Students and staff from IT Sligo held a minute’s silence across the campus on Monday as a mark of respect for the victims of the Paris attacks last Friday night.

The Institute currently has 59 French Erasmus students. The majority of these are studying International Marketing. Several staff members are also of French nationality.

“This is a very difficult and traumatic time for our French student and staff members,” said Professor Vincent Cunnane, President of IT Sligo. “While the indications at this stage are that none of them was in France at the weekend, the tragic events in Paris are sure to have had a profound effect on them. The Institute is doing everything it can to support our international colleagues.”

Members of the management team met with the Institute’s French students on Monday. IT Sligo’s student support services, which include counselling and pastoral care, have been made available to them.

The Institute is also providing similar support for its Muslim students, some of whom may be feeling vulnerable at this time.

The Irish flag at IT Sligo was lowered on Monday in a show of solidarity, as was the case on state buildings across the country.

A book of condolence has been opened for students, staff and visitors to sign in the Institute’s main reception.
