ELGAR Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85 (30′)
BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 6 in F, Op. 68 ‘Pastoral’ (39′)

‘No one,’ wrote Beethoven, ‘can love the country as much as I do. For surely woods, trees and rocks produce the echo which man desires to hear.’ A profound vision of humanity and nature can be found in his Sixth Symphony, the much loved ‘Pastoral’, undoubtedly one of his most popular symphonies.

RTE National Symphony Orchestra publicity imageElgar’s cello concerto is a work associated with the great British cellist, Jacqueline du Pré. It was she who made this valedictory and beautiful concerto so popular. Elgar himself described it as ‘a real large work, and I think good and alive.’ It was to be his last major work; many consider it his greatest. Written in the wake of World War I, it was his deeply personal response to a world changed forever and to times never to return. A wistful, poignant, passionate, tender, romantic and noble work.

Soloist will be the French cello virtuoso Gautier Capuçon, playing a 1701 Matteo Goffriller. Capuçon is widely recognised as one of the foremost cellists of his generation, receiving consistently high critical praise for his recordings and performances. His Boston Symphony orchestra début in February was hailed by The Boston Classical Review as ‘memorable’, one in which he ‘held the audience in thrall’. Following his Irish performances he goes on to début with the Berlin Philharmonic under Dudamel, and with the London Symphony Orchestra and Gergiev at the Vienna Konzerthaus.

The programme will be conducted by Paul McCreesh, a musician who has established himself at the highest levels in both the period instrument and modern orchestral fields through his guest conducting and his work with the Gabrieli Consort & Players, of which he is the founder and Artistic Director
