Three lecturers from IT Sligo’s School of Engineering are advising a family owned contracting and development business in Northern Ireland on the development of a new low cost, energy efficient modular housing model akin to the German Hauf Haus.
Pat Naughton, Tomas O’Flaherty and Peter Scanlon have joined Kelly Brothers in an InterTradeIreland Fusion project, which they hope will lead to the company entering the manufacturing side of the construction industry for the first time.
The project will involve the development of a prefabricated turn-key modular house for both the domestic and export market.
“Sustainability is central to both the process and the end product,” explained Pat Naughton. “We will be advising Kelly Brothers on how to utilize the most efficient processes and systems to maximise the energy rating and reduce waste in the development of the modular house.”
This is the Institute’s first involvement in an InterTradeIreland Fusion project. The initiative matches businesses in the North with academic expertise in the South, and vice versa, and involves the recruitment of a graduate by the leading company.
