The Irish Biomedical, Healthcare, Diagnostic and Medical Device industries are now firmly established as one of our most important and will continue to be so. Students who follow this programme can look forward to exciting and rewarding careers in medical Device manufacture, quality and validation, biomedical engineering research and implant design.
IT Sligo students have the option of moving into the Level 8 Honours Pharmaceutical Science qualification upon completion of their Ordinary degree which will also improve employment potential within the Irish Pharmaceutical Industry. Employment prospects are good for Science graduates and a high percentage will continue on to fourth level to taught and research Masters programmes.

SCIENCE ?
The Irish Pharmaceutical industry has witnessed a huge expansion in the last decade. Graduates can find work in many settings including manufacturing, healthcare, research and education. The sector remains at the forefront of Ireland’s knowledge based economy and therefore many graduates will continue with their studies to postgraduate and Masters levels. Graduates also have the option of going on to complete the Masters in Industrial Pharmaceutical Science from IT Sligo which is run in conjunction with the Royal College of Surgeons. Employment prospects remain very good for Science graduates.

In recent years, various studies of accidents and illnesses in the workplace have lead to increasing requirements for worker protection. As a result, there has been a very significant increase in EU driven legislation in the health & safety area. The Irish Government has been active in transposing much of this legislation into Irish Statute law and this has led to a significant growth in health & safety awareness at both management and employee level. This has lead to a significant demand for people with health & safety qualifications to fulfill legal and practical requirements in the workplace. The Occupational Health & Safety course at IT Sligo delivers a broad knowledge base to students across a range of health & safety areas. As an IT Sligo graduate you have a good scientific understanding of health & safety issues and can be employed as safety professionals across a range of occupational settings.

The Health Science and Physiology degree at IT Sligo leads students directly onto and Honours qualification in Health Promotion within the college. Health Promotion is a growing area and specialists may work in a particular setting, such as the workplace, community, schools, or prisons, or with a particular issue, such as drugs, healthy eating, or tobacco control. They may also work with specific populations such as young men, the elderly, or people with disabilities. Some may have a more generic role.
