Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choose your course?

I’m someone who thrives on challenges. Although I didn’t focus much on STEM subjects while growing up, I’ve always had a deep love for math. My interest in robotics and Formula 1 fueled my curiosity, and when it came time to choose a course, engineering seemed like the perfect fit. The first year being a general year was a huge draw for me, as it gave me the opportunity to explore different areas of engineering before deciding on my specialty. I’m happy to say that I’ve found the right path for me.

What specifically about the course do you particularly enjoy?

I really appreciate how hands-on and practical the course is. From the very first week, we were in the lab, applying what we learned in real-world settings. This practical approach is crucial because it not only helps us understand the theories we’re taught, but also shows us why they matter. Being able to work directly with the concepts we study brings the material to life and deepens our understanding.

What are your favourite modules on the course?

So far, my favorite modules are Introduction to Programming and Introduction to Engineering, particularly the robotics project. It challenged me in the best way possible, pushing me to think creatively and solve problems. The hands-on experience in these modules has been incredibly rewarding and has reinforced my passion for engineering.

If you were speaking with a first-year student about to start your course, what advice would you give them?

My advice would be not to stress too much about deciding which branch of engineering to pursue. The first year gives you plenty of time to explore and figure out what suits you best, and there’s always the option to change your mind. Also, if you ever need clarification about the different courses, don’t hesitate to ask the lecturers—they’re always willing to help and provide guidance.

If you are involved in sports, volunteering, working, or have other passions you pursue outside of your academic life, can you tell us about that? Especially mention any teams, clubs, or awards.

I’m the Treasurer of both the Games and Tea societies, and I’m proud to say that our Game Society won Society of the Year for the second year in a row. It’s a huge achievement, and being part of these societies has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I strongly recommend that everyone get involved in a club or society—it’s a great way to meet people and pursue your interests. Additionally, I volunteer as a Student Ambassador for the University, where I help out at open days and other events throughout the year. It’s a role I’m passionate about because it allows me to give back and support future students.

What are your plans after ATU Sligo and any long-term goals you are aiming for?

I haven’t fully figured that out yet, and I’ve come to realize that it’s okay not to have everything mapped out. I still have three years left, and I’m focused on working as hard as I can in the present. I’m confident that when the time comes to decide my next steps, I’ll be prepared to cross that bridge. For now, I’m embracing the journey and keeping an open mind about the future.
