Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choosing your course:

The prospect of studying engineering was always on my radar, as I was always inquisitive about how things were made. After my leaving cert I took a year out after which I decided to study civil engineering as it is a broad degree with the opportunity to travel and work in various sectors. My initial 3 years were on the level 7 course, furthering this with a 2 year add-on degree to achieve a level 8.

What specifically about the course did you particularly enjoy?

An enjoyable aspect of this course is the opportunity to go on work placement in 4^th year. This allowed us to enter the working world and see concepts taught in class be used in industry. Another great aspect of the course was the field trips where we visited an operational water treatment plant and a wind farm.

What is the best thing about the course that you think new applicants should know?

Like anything worth doing, it’s hard work. The course itself is fantastic and focuses on practical applications. Every semester there are new projects to be worked on, these can range from surveying a river and using that data in modelling software to perform a flood risk assessment to the design of multi-storey buildings. Also, this course is accredited by Engineers Ireland, which helps with becoming a Chartered Engineer.

Any favourite modules during your time studying?

During the program, we cover core modules like Maths, Structures, and Hydraulics, while also covering Materials, Environmental Engineering, Law, and Project Management. So, picking a favourite is too hard, but I have built up a strong wide-ranging knowledge base.

What key skills did you learn while studying in ATU Sligo that have influenced your career?

The modules in this programme prepared the class for the working world. Over the five years of study, the knowledge and advice gained will prove to be invaluable.

Can you share some detail of your career path or further studies to date?

I have an interest in renewable energy and aim to focus my work in the energy sector. The great thing about this course is that its graduates are in high demand. Upon leaving ATU Sligo, I will be working as a graduate Civil Engineer with ESB.

What advice would you share with our current students considering a career in your field?

Gain industry experience through summer internships and apply the knowledge the course has taught you, and you’ll return to the classroom refreshed and focused.

What did you like best about studying in ATU Sligo?

The community feel on the campus is excellent. I made friends for life and with small class groups, I have a close relationship with all of my classmates. The lecturers were always helpful and more than happy to answer any question, a huge bonus was having lecturers who had industry experience.

What advice would you give a first-year student starting in ATU Sligo?

It’s not what you join with… it’s what you leave with.
