Fourth year Public Health and Health Promotion students held a CPR and Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome Awareness Day in IT Sligo this week.

Representatives from the Irish Heart Foundation and Cardiac Risk in the Youth (CRY) attended to inform staff and students about the risks associated with cardiac arrests and to raise awareness about Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome.

CPR and defibrillator demonstrations were provided in the Main Canteen and the students engaged in fundraising for a defibrillator for IT Sligo sports clubs.

“For every minute that someone fails to start CPR on a collapsed victim, their chances of survival decreases by 10% per minute. We organised this event to raise awareness about cardiac arrests and to urge people to get defibrillator training. It could be a matter of life and death for someone,” said Aisling Doherty, one of the students involved in organising the CPR and SADS Awareness Campaign Day.

The Public Health and Health Promotion students were assisted in the promotion of the event by two students from the Higher Certificate in Accounting, Sarah Connell and Leona Vahey.
