A group of First Year Recreation and Leisure students have just received their Irish Water Safety Assistant Swim Teacher Award as part of their swimming module on the course. The Assistant Swim Teacher course trains the candidates to teach swimming to small groups of swimmers of all abilities. Theory lectures in the Institute are combined with practical teaching classes in Sanovitae Health & Spa, Clarion Hotel. An additional element of this training is the Swim Teacher Lifesaving Award which students must pass in order to get certified as swim teachers. The lifesaving award covers basic life support, land based and water based rescues and a distance swim test the students to their limit.
About fifty students will train for the award this year’ comments Paula Roddy, lecturer in Recreation and Leisure. ‘The swimming module on the Recreation and Leisure course also aims to improve the students own swimming ability through practical swim classes. We work with students of all swimming abilities, from non swimmer to advanced on the course. In the past we have taken students who can’t swim in first year and by the time they leave in Third Year, they have a pool lifeguard award’. Students have the opportunity in second and third year to take the aquatics electives which build on the training in first year and include Pool lifeguard Qualification, Automatic External Defibrillation training, Pool Plant Foundation certification and Level 2 Swim Teacher certification. These industry recognised qualifications are important when applying for jobs in the leisure industry and compliment their overall Bachelor of Business degree.
