Daniel Rooney, US Ambassador to Ireland, visited IT Sligo this morning.
The Ambassador and his wife Patricia, were greeted by IT Sligo President Professor Terri Scott. Rooney was in Sligo to take part in an Open Forum Discussion “How can we use internet technologies for competitive advantage?”. Questions from the audience were full and frank and answered candidly by panellists, as the economic future of Ireland and the North West in particular was discussed. The Forum was attended by Sligo business people, community representatives, IT Sligo staff and second and third level students.
Accompanying Ambassador Rooney on the discussion panel were Professor Terri Scott, President, IT Sligo; John O’Brien, Secretary IDA Ireland and Declan Walsh, Financial Director for Lotus Works.
The Ambassador, who was appointed to Ireland earlier this year, is visiting every county in Ireland meeting local people to engage in discussions with them. The grandson of an Irish immigrant, Rooney in the 1970s helped found the American Ireland Fund, an organization that has raised millions for advocacy of peace and education in Ireland. His legacy is reflected in a Steelers-themed bar in a disused linen mill in one of the roughest parts of northwest Belfast. In announcing the nomination on St. Patrick’s Day, Obama called Rooney “an unwavering supporter of Irish peace, culture and education.”
